Atlas of the New West: Portrait of a Changing Region
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (November, 1997)
Authors: William E. Riebsame, James Robb, Boulder Center of the American West University of Colorado, and Hannah Gosnell
Average review score:

An essential reference
For anyone who loves the West -- Old or New -- this innovative atlas must find a place on your bookshelf. Created at the University of Colorado's Center of the American West, it charts beautifully and eloquently how the American West has evolved. This volume will help you understand how some myths of the West grew out of proportion to the facts, and how some are not myths at all, but semi-fantastic truths.

To understand the contemporary West, this book would be a good starting place.

Excellent Illustrations of the Changes Underway in the West
One of the best introductions to social, economic and environmental trends taking place in the Western United States. The graphs and photos highlight the new trends from water usage to ethic population patterns. The 7 chapters and two essays provide telling examples of how communtities are adapting to the changes (or not adapting in some cases). The work is footnoted to provide jumping off points for more research. Also, I found the quotes that are placed throughout the margins of the text to be extremely insightful.

The book shines at showing how the West is moving away from a culture of exploiting natural resources for basic industry and instead exploiting the natural beauty to draw ever increasing numbers of residents and visitors.

At last, a current guide to the geography of hope.
The University of Colorado's School of Geography uses basic demographic and economic data to profile in understandable maps and graphs the population explosion occurring in the Western United States. The Atlas gives a dramatic presentation of the net in migration into an area with little water and vast amounts of open space. It chronicles the shift in economic activity from traditional industries such as mining and logging, to new industries such as information technologies and service activities. The latter having a special, and economically, rewarding basis in tourism. The Atlas portrays, in graphic form the perdictions made in Cadillac Deseret. It is a must read for anyone concerned about perserving western heritage for future generations.

The Heart of Learning: Spirituality in Education (New Consciousness Reader)
Published in Paperback by J. P. Tarcher (March, 1999)
Authors: Steven Glazer, Colo.) Spirituality in Education Conference (1997 Boulder, and Huston Smith
Average review score:

Love, Peace, and School
This beautiful international book is where I found my dissertation. Learn something new in the service of children.

The seminal book for today's education reform.
If just one teacher in every classroom bought this book and began to present the ideas of love and respect, autonomy and trust in the classroom (each and every classroom in the U.S.) the questions on the news would be answered.

Many of the problems in education seem to stem from alienation of individuals in the classrooms of America. Children are forced to feel apart from the class rather than being an integral part of the class and their own individual creative learning experience. The Naropa Conference was clear and honest in the formation of the new class curriculum. Respect for each and every student. Love as the main ingredient of the daily interactions.

If just that one (as in every one) teacher, bought the book...could undedrstand the message, and would apply it to his or her life, alienation and pressure to perform would be relics of an antiquated system destined to doom and failure. Children would begin to become the bright radiant suns of learning and personal growth rather than the reflecting moons of past educational process.

Highly recommend. A must for every person involved with children, from preschool through 100.

Excellent reading for every parent, teacher, college student.
This is an incredible book; a unique approach to integrating spirituality and education that includes writing from the Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, academic, feminist, environmental and scientific perspective. I highly recommend its use in college philosophy and education classes, as a thought-provoking selection for book clubs, and as important reading material for concerned parents and teachers. I highly recommend it.

this is the most beautiful map I have ever seen
the quality of this map is amazing in that it is water proof and greatly detailed. Any one that likes the outdoors should ilnvest in such a treasure.

This is a facinating and educational map, excellent detail
I have yet to see a map so well done. The fact that Mr. Schulte began drawing these maps by hand makes them even more fascinating. Great detail, enjoyable trails for the novice trail blazer and exciting trips for the hard core. Great job. Hopefully we will see more types of maps soon

A Mile Higher Quality!
This is a cookbook that lives up to the reputation of the Flat Irons of the Front Range in Colorado that loom over the multi faceted "mini-tropolis" of Boulder, Colorado. If you love to cook, or love Colorado, or love libraries, this is a cookbook that belongs in your kitchen, in your collection, and to give as the perfect gift to anyone with wanderlust for mountains, enjoy exciting comfort food, or fantasize about being the next Emeril!

Some of the recipes that we whole heartedly endorse from the book are: 1. Shrimp with Coconut (Udand Kelapa), 2. Coleslaw Dressing, 3. Crispy Waffles, 4. Vegetables Al Forno, 5. California Bouillabaisse.

There are more recipes we have tried and enjoyed as well. The book is a bounty. Like Colorado itself, the book represents a colorful array of cultures, tastes, nutritional choices, ideas, and menus for everyday and special occasions.

The additional benefit to the University of Colorado Norlin Library is not to be overlooked. Norlin is an outstanding library that has a history rich with offering students, faculity, and the community at large a resource that is world class.

The Necessary Guide for all serious boulerers
This bouldering guide is truely remarkable. The hand drawings add a unique character to the book not seen in any books of this kind to date. The information here is written from a top notch local's perspective. The classics you find in this book are well mapped and described in text. Other books attempting to copy this original guide have not nearly the overview map quality and descriptive precision seen here, A must buy for any true boulderer.

Play Dead: An Allie Babcock Mystery Number 1 (Thorndike Large Print Mystery Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (February, 1900)
Author: Leslie O'Kane
Average review score:

Great Dog Mystery
The new Allie Babcock series is a welcome addition to the semi-new genre of doglover's mysteries. The plot is fast moving and exciting, the dog related areas authentic, and it is not preachy as some of these novels tend to be. All in all this is a fun and entertaining mystery that should appeal to all, not just doglovers.

wonderful
i have become a big fan of allie's after reading this book-for any dog lover mystery fan its a must. not only is it entertaining but its informative in learning how to handle the different behavior problems in your dog. i've just started 'ruff way to go' and i hope these are just just the beginning of a long line of books based on this character.

Quirky Boulder, Colorado, Dogs and a great mystery!
An intriguing whodunit that I thoroughly enjoyed. Leslie O'Kane knows Boulder and knows dogs, and I can say I learned plenty about dog behavior while enjoying a good read. Can't get any better than that!

Chandler's Daughter: A Lexy Connor Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Write Way Publishing (01 January, 2000)
Author: Truly Donovan
Average review score:

An exciting new cozy!
Truly Donovan's debut mystery CHANDLER'S DAUGHTER is the beginning of a wonderful cozy mystery series.

As I read, I found myself taken with Ms. Donovan's single, plus-size, middle-aged, amateur sleuth Lexy Connor. She is witty, intelligent and delightful!

Lexy lives in Gunbarrel, Colorado, where she runs her own software consulting company. She loves to eat out with friends and owns a lovable, well-mannered Westie named Molly. Those of us who can't live without our mysteries, Internet or email, will find a comrade in Lexy as she is blessed with the same passions.

In her debut mystery, Lexy finds her quiet Colorado world shaken when her friend Tally calls for help. Tally offers to pay Lexy her usual software consultation fee, if she will solve the mystery of a dead stranger Tally was supposed to meet. This mystery has Lexy traveling the country (a trip you don't want to miss) in an attempt to find the murderer who is also hunting for her friend.

Donovan's Daughter is a must-have book.
I read a library copy of "Donovan's Daughter" and so thoroughly enjoyed it, that I now have a copy on order. I want to own this series from the very beginning.

Lexy Connor is a great heroine. She is well past the first blush of youth, but is smart, vital and ready to do anything for a friend.

She searches for the true parentage of Tally, a young woman who is being threatened even though she knows nothing of her true background. Her parents have been dead for years. She comes to Lexy because Lexy knew her adoptive parents.

With few clues to go on, Lexy (along with her delightful dog) goes across country to solve a mystery that puts her and some of her friends in grave danger.

Don't miss this exciting and humorous first mystery with an unforgettable heroine.

Wonderful mystery with a difference
Meet Lexy Connor, a plump, middle aged, single woman whose life revolves around her business, her dog Molly and her friends. Lexy's a likable sort - a little eccentric and unquestioningly loyal to those she cares about. A late night call from the daughter of an old friend provokes her protective instincts and has Lexy serving up advice alongside scrambled eggs. Tally is in trouble and needs her help.

Never one to disappoint a friend, Lexy is ready to go to work when she learns that someone is stalking Tally with the apparent intent to kill. All clues lead back to Tally's birth, so the two develop a plan to discover her birth parents' identities in hopes of solving the mystery. With just a high school friendship ring found in the secret compartment of a jewelry box that belonged to Tally's late adopted mother, Lexy hops on a plane with Molly in tow and starts turning over a few rocks. Unfortunately, potential informants start turning up dead. All too soon, someone's after Lexy too.

Chandler's Daughter is one of the most delightful books I've read in a while. The cover and blurb led me to expect a grandmotherly-type cozy. What I found instead was non-stop action with a little reality thrown in and a highly satisfying conclusion. The violence and sex were minimal, taking place mostly off-scene. Not all situations were entirely believable, but they were entertaining and worked well within the frame of the plot. I won't hesitate to pick up the next book by Truly Donovan.
